Chatter Matters - Developing Speech and Language

Why is Language Development so important?

Developing language skills is of absolute importance for young children’s success later in life both as social beings and in pursuing an education.

Language is the foundation for all social interactions, having problems to communicate can cause frustration both for you as a parent, but more importantly for your child.

The development of language is strongly interdependent with, and supports, your child’s brain development and cognitive development. Studies have shown that having a large vocabulary increases creativity and helps people to come up with new ideas. Essential skills for successful learners.

The following links will support parents and carers in being able to enhance opportunities for language development in ways which are simple and effective.

If you are concerned about your child's speech and language development, please speak with us.

Thank you,

Mrs Hanson

Communication Champion for St. John's

What is WellComm and how do we use this at St John's?

WellComm is a speech and language toolkit that can be used with children from 6 months to 6 years of age. It is a means of tracking progress of all children and will identify areas of concern in language, communication and interaction.

We screen all of our EYFS children and track their progress with language termly.

Any concerns will be raised and addressed with early intervention.

Your child's class teacher will be able to direct you to specific areas for development and support.  Speech and Language referrals can be made where children are significantly behind their expected stage.
